Blue earth review
Blue Earth Review is Minnesota State University, Mankato’s graduate-run literary magazine. Before being wholly revamped and renamed in 2003, BER was published under such titles as Medicine Jug, The Muse, and Minnesota River Review. Our contributors have included folks such as Steve Almond, Nicelle Davis, Alex Lemon, Jennifer Whitaker, Kristen N. Arnett, and Charles Baxter.
From 2008 to 2022, Blue Earth Review has been funded by the MSU Barnes & Noble Bookstore and patron donations. In 2023, our funding shifted to the MSU Follett Bookstore. These sources help to cover printing, mailing, advertising, and other costs of running a magazine.
We’re looking for ambitious and exuberant works of short fiction, essay, memoir, poetry, and visual art that offer insights, complicates existing conversations, and enriches our understanding of what it means to be human in this increasingly diverse world. Our motto? Small all format; dramatic impact. We gravitate towards small, focused works in which every word matters.
We accept all voices, and do not discriminate based on race, ancestry, disability, gender identity, national origin, religion, or sexual orientation. Our mission is to create a collection of artistic works that celebrate the uniqueness of the world told through characters, verse, and artists—compacted into our square magazine.
We print twice annually, once in the spring and once in the fall. Except for contest winners, we do not publish online at this time.
